Grindersparks are the debris caused by the rubbing of a piece of metal against a grinding wheel and is the combination of the two materials. In this film the artist stages an attempt to ‘fetch a pail of grindersparks’. This is a typical tradesman’s prank used as a fool’s errand to keep an apprentice busy and out of the master’s way while supplying humour to members of the shop. You cannot actually catch a spark as it will go out.
